-
The perinatal period is a common time for women and AFAB folks to identify their ADHD identity. The mix of hormones, high executive functioning demands, disruptions of unconscious supports/accommodation, and frequent disruptions highlight ADHD traits.
-
While the postpartum period is challenging for nearly everyone, ADHDers have unique struggles that are often minimized or dismissed by others. This traumatic invalidation can be just as hard as the perinatal challenges themselves.
-
ADHD is not just a cognitive difference. ADHDers are much more likely to have many physical conditions that can impact the peripartum period (preconception to 3 years after birth).
-
Understanding sensory needs is so key for peripartum people. Knowing not just what sensory experiences are distressing, but also those that are needed for wellness can make a huge difference in the peripartum experience.
-
Medication management of ADHD is safe for most pregnant and breast/chestfeeding people. It is important to connect with prescribers who understand perinatal psychiatry.
-
ADHD perinatal joy is abundant. When someone understands their ADHD needs, they can also lean into their ADHD joy. New interests to explore, spontaneity that infuses the time with wonder, and creating a home that embraces supports and accommodations so the whole family can thrive.
